Equity and Social Considerations Related to Climate Change: Papers Presented at the IPCC Working Group III Workshop on Equity and Social Considerations Related to Climate Change, Nairobi, Kenya, 18-22 July 1994

This volume compiles scholarly papers and conference contributions examining equity in the context of climate change, environmental governance and international law. It explores both intra-generational and intergenerational dimensions of fairness, addressing allocation of emission rights, differentiated responsibilities, and the distribution of costs and benefits across countries, regions and social groups. Ethical foundations, including universalisability, stewardship and responsibility to future generations, are analysed alongside economic approaches such as cost–benefit analysis, social discount rates and the shadow price of capital. Legal sections review equitable principles in continental shelf delimitation, international watercourse management and the climate change regime. Case studies highlight the vulnerabilities of small island states and developing countries, as well as distributional impacts within nations. The workshop underpinning the volume sought to inform draft chapters of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Second Assessment Report and to familiarise policy advisers with the mandate of Working Group Three, which addresses cross-cutting social and economic issues and the evaluation of policy options related to greenhouse gases and climate change.
