Abstract
The role of UNEP, as the United Nations body responsible for the environment, is described in the Barbados Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States (BPoA) as follows: “UNEP, taking into account development perspectives, should continue to provide policy guidance and coordination in the field of environment, including in the implementation of the BPoA”. In the Chapter on Coastal and Marine Resources the UNEP Regional Seas Programme and the scheme that later became the Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-based Activities (GPA), are called to assist small island developing States (SIDS) with the development and implementation of integrated coastal zone management plans, to improve international coordination in that field and to develop strategies to prevent further marine and coastal degradation.
