Libreville Declaration on Health and Environment in Africa

This declaration presents the outcomes and commitments of the First Inter-Ministerial Conference on Health and Environment in Africa, held in Libreville, Gabon, from 28 to 29 August 2008. It outlines concerns regarding environmental risks affecting public health, including unsafe water, sanitation challenges, pollution, climate-related impacts and other environmental pressures. The document describes commitments by African countries to establish strategic cooperation, integrate health and environment considerations into policies, strengthen institutional capacities, support research and knowledge management, improve surveillance systems, and develop monitoring mechanisms. It also identifies roles for international organisations in supporting implementation, capacity development, experience sharing and progress assessment. The declaration was adopted in Libreville on 29 August 2008 by participating African countries.
