Emissions Gap Report 2023 - Key Messages

This document contains the key messages of the 2023 Emissions Gap Report, which warns that the world is heading for a temperature rise of 2.5–2.9°C this century unless much stronger action is taken. It highlights that emissions must fall by 28 per cent by 2030 for a 2°C pathway and by 42 per cent for a 1.5°C pathway. However, the current unconditional and conditional NDCs only deliver reductions of 2 and 9 per cent respectively compared to current policies. Immediate, economy-wide mitigation is therefore essential in this decade. The report emphasises that high-income, high-emitting countries must lead the way with deeper reductions and expanded financial and technical support, while low- and middle-income countries face both challenges and opportunities in pursuing low-carbon development.
