Abstract
This executive summary summarises current scientific understanding of changes in the Earth’s stratospheric ozone layer and the processes influencing those changes. It draws on laboratory investigations, atmospheric observations, and theoretical modelling to examine chemical interactions in the atmosphere and their relationship to ozone depletion and climate processes. The document reviews trends in ozone-depleting substances, including reduced growth rates resulting from international control measures, while noting increasing concentrations of substitute compounds. It describes observed global and regional ozone declines, including severe seasonal depletion over Antarctica and measurable losses at mid-latitudes. The assessment also examines volcanic influences, atmospheric chemistry involving chlorine and bromine, links between ozone reduction and ultraviolet radiation at the surface, and implications for climate forcing and environmental policy decisions.
