Sustainable Consumption and Production for Poverty Eradication

Sustainable consumption and production (SCP) was one of the priorities identified at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992, where it was recognized that sustainable development requires a transformation of consumption and production patterns in both developed and developing countries. In developed countries it would require an absolute decoupling of material resource use from growth in economic activities. Both here and in developing countries, where resource consumption may be expected to increase from its current low levels, far less wasteful use of the Earth’s resources is required. A transformation in global production patterns in the direction of greatly increased resource efficiency and care and investment in the use of renewable resources, is also required to ensure that they are indeed renewed
