The Emissions Gap Report 2016 - Executive Summary

This document presents an evidence-based assessment of how current and planned national actions measure against the Paris Agreement’s temperature goals. It reports that global greenhouse gas emissions reached about 52.7 GtCO2e in 2014 and that fossil-fuel and industry CO2 stabilized near 36.2 Gt in 2015, yet the world remains off a trajectory compatible with “well below 2°C.” It finds the 2030 emissions gap is 12–14 GtCO2e for a 2°C pathway, about 3 Gt larger for 1.5°C, and that fully implementing unconditional versus conditional pledges implies median warming of ~3.2°C versus ~3.0°C by 2100. The analysis notes mixed G20 progress, the potential of non-state initiatives, and priority energy-efficiency policies in buildings, industry, and transport, and maps links to selected Sustainable Development Goals.
