Aerial Survey of the Threats to Mt. Kilimanjaro Forests

This report presents a systematic assessment of threats affecting forest ecosystems on a major East African mountain, undertaken to inform conservation planning and community-based management initiatives. It situates the survey within a broader conservation programme that seeks to strengthen biodiversity protection through community-based approaches that complement existing efforts. The programme focuses on enhancing local organisational capacity, increasing awareness, fostering cooperation among stakeholders, and linking conservation with sustainable development. The study outlines ecological significance and institutional context, and applies aerial survey methods using structured flight paths, geographic positioning systems, and photographic records. Findings identify widespread human-induced pressures, including logging, fires, charcoal production, settlement expansion, grazing, and cultivation, providing a baseline for monitoring and coordinated conservation action.
