This report examines the development and harmonisation of environmental standards across Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. It presents national approaches to environmental standards, reviews existing legislation, guidelines, scientific knowledge and technologies, and identifies priority areas for regulation. The report considers standards relating to air, water and soil, including pollution control, waste management and land use. It also outlines criteria and methodologies for measuring standards, enforcement considerations, institutional responsibilities and capacity-building needs, while identifying areas requiring harmonisation at the East African sub-regional level.
