Energy for Rural Development: A Time to Act

This report provides an account of a technical and humanitarian initiative developed by the United Nations Environment Programme. It documents experimental projects in Sri Lanka, the Philippines, and Senegal, aimed at addressing rural energy deficits through integrated renewable energy systems. Combining wind, solar, and biogas technologies, each pilot site demonstrates a localized, sustainable energy model that seeks to improve living standards, reduce environmental degradation, and promote rural development. In Sri Lanka, an innovative village-scale energy center delivers electricity for lighting, water provision, and public services. The Philippines project focuses on water supply and micro-hydropower for small industries, while Senegal’s experiment centers on solar-powered irrigation and biogas for household cooking. The report reflects early but critical steps toward energy self-sufficiency in underserved communities, emphasizing participatory development, environmental sustainability, and the transformative power of decentralized energy access.
