Building Designers Can Contribute to Lead-Free Paint

This document is a side event presentation delivered in Nairobi, Kenya on 23 May 2016 by George Arabbu of the Architectural Association of Kenya on how building designers can support the use of lead-free paint. It situates designers within a broader chain that includes manufacturers, retailers, design and project professionals, developers, builders, schools, government and non-government organizations, households, offices, factories, workers, and shopkeepers. It proposes practical steps: leverage existing relationships with paint manufacturers and stakeholders, engage manufacturers and contractors on international standards in the short term, specify lead free paints in drawings and bills of quantities, and strengthen supervision of builders’ work.
