Genetically Modified Organisms: A Guide to Biosafety

Abstract

This guide provides a technical overview of biosafety issues associated with genetically modified organisms and is intended to support researchers and regulators involved in biotechnology. It presents an impartial examination of the scientific, policy, and regulatory considerations relevant to the safe development, containment, and environmental release of modified organisms. The document reviews approaches to biological risk assessment, including the identification of hazards, evaluation of potential environmental and health effects, and the assignment of appropriate containment and monitoring measures. Reference to existing national regulatory frameworks is included to illustrate differing oversight approaches and to assist readers in assessing suitable regulatory responses in specific contexts. The volume also examines institutional and policy factors influencing biosafety governance. Its chapters address key themes such as biological risk assessment and implementation issues, public perception of biotechnology, the assessment and contained use of genetically modified microorganisms, safety considerations for transgenic crop plants, environmental release of modified rhizobia and mycorrhizas, safety aspects of microbial pesticides, biosafety in the contained use and release of transgenic animals and recombinant proteins, and safety considerations in aquatic biotechnology. Together, these sections outline the scientific and regulatory foundations used to evaluate biosafety risks and guide biotechnology oversight.
