Abstract
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The Congo Basin peatlands, spanning the Republic of Congo (RoC) and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), constitute the world's largest tropical peatland complex. The recently mapped peatlands of the Cuvette Centrale are estimated to be the largest continuous tropical peat complex in the world at 145,000 km², storing approximately 30 gigatons of carbon, equivalent to two years of global greenhouse gas emissions.
