Environmental Data, Policy and the Sustainable Development Goals: The Case Study of Guyana

This case study examines how environmental data management supports implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in Guyana by assessing national data systems, institutional arrangements and policy coherence. It describes challenges including fragmented agency coordination, outdated legislation, overlapping institutional mandates and significant environmental data gaps that affect national reporting and monitoring. The document outlines how the United Nations Environment Programme supported capacity-building, policy reform and inter-agency cooperation through training, technical guidance, data-sharing protocols and institutional accountability measures. It concludes that strengthening environmental governance, legal frameworks, coordination mechanisms and environmental data systems is essential for sustainable development, evidence-based decision-making and effective monitoring of environmental commitments.
