Asian Regional Workshop on Environmental Training of Practising Civil Engineers: Final Report

This report summarizes an international workshop organized by UNESCO and UNEP in May 1975 at the University of Malaya, bringing together 21 senior civil engineers and educators from 18 Asian and Pacific countries. The event focused on integrating environmental considerations into civil engineering education and practice. Participants explored region-specific challenges such as urbanization, environmental degradation, and resource mismanagement, and emphasized the need for engineers to adopt tools like environmental impact assessments, systems analysis, and appropriate technologies. The workshop highlighted the importance of community engagement, interdisciplinary training, and the role of engineers in addressing societal needs. It presented curriculum proposals, case studies, and methodologies aimed at embedding environmental awareness in engineering education. Special attention was given to establishing regional cooperation networks for knowledge exchange and capacity building.
