Abstract

Following the success of the Global Waste Management Outlook, IETC has been leading the development of a series of regional and thematic WM outlook. The Africa WM Outlook is part of this series and looks at the continent's trends in waste management and calls for action for improvements in the sector. This summary examines waste management in Africa, detailing trends, impacts, and actions needed, noting that over 90% of municipal waste is dumped or burned and only 4% recycled, while highlighting socio-economic and environmental consequences, drivers of growth, and priorities including expanding collection, promoting reuse and recycling, integrating informal sectors, improving data and awareness, deploying suitable technologies, strengthening legislation, and fostering investment to harness waste as a resource.
