Abstract
This summary report presents a baseline assessment of walking and cycling conditions across all 54 African countries, drawing on existing data interpreted through a walking and cycling perspective. It examines the everyday mobility realities of people who rely on active transport, highlights examples of effective practice, and identifies challenges affecting safety, health, and accessibility. The report argues for prioritising walking and cycling within urban transport planning to support equitable, low-carbon development and provides recommendations for governments and other stakeholders to improve, protect, and expand sustainable transport networks.
