Indigenous People and ASGM

This presentation examines the interaction between indigenous peoples and artisanal and small-scale gold mining amid rising gold prices and expansion into remote and protected ancestral territories. It reviews international human rights laws and principles, including rights to development, self-determination, participation, culture, land, health and a balanced environment. It outlines socio-economic, environmental and health impacts, cultural change and conflict associated with mining, and presents a transition model from exploration to exploitation and decline. It further describes national legal frameworks, mercury treaty implementation planning, stakeholder mapping, rapid assessments, life-cycle management, capacity building, alternative livelihoods and monitoring within a Local Action Plan framework.
