Abstract

At the Summit of the Future, on 22 September 2024, world leaders adopted the Pact for the Future, in which they expressed their belief in a path to a brighter future for all of humanity. They pledged to take action to strengthen multilateralism with renewed commitments to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Given that Asia and the Pacific account for nearly half of the global gross domestic product (GDP) and 60 per cent of the world’s population, the region plays a central role in shaping future outcomes and driving global development. Actions taken by Member States and other stakeholders and cooperation within the region, have the potential to address the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and land degradation, and pollution as well as investment challenges for sustainable development.
