Implementing the African Elephant Action Plan: Central African Projects

This document summarizes several Central Africa initiatives focused on elephant protection, monitoring, and law enforcement capacity. It describes projects in Chad that maintained operational coordination during Covid-19 and expanded elephant monitoring by fitting seventeen elephants with GPS collars for continuous movement tracking, supporting management decisions and reducing poaching. It also outlines a 2016 regional effort across the Republic of the Congo, Cameroon, and the Central African Republic to strengthen cooperation through a wildlife law enforcement training workshop in the Sangha Trinational Site. Additional activities include establishing intelligence networks and community awareness meetings in Congo, conducting elephant and large mammal inventories in Gabon, improving ranger training and equipment, developing quadcopter and infrared monitoring, and building national capability for genetic traceability of ivory.
