TEEB for Agriculture & Food: Towards a Global Study on the Economics of Eco-Agri-Food Systems

This report presents initial insights into the objectives of The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity for Agriculture and Food, outlining key policy issues and examining the dependency of agri-food systems on ecosystems and biodiversity, their impacts on human and ecological well-being and health, and the underrecognised role of small-scale farmers. It establishes an analytical framework integrating ecological, economic and social dimensions to assess agriculture as a critical sector supporting livelihoods, food provision and cultural systems, while also documenting environmental and health impacts such as biodiversity loss, emissions and resource pressures. The document highlights the economic invisibility of ecosystem services and proposes valuation approaches to incorporate these hidden costs and benefits into decision-making and policy analysis.
