Case Study : ASGM Project in Central Kalimantra

This document presents a case study on international assistance and collaboration to address ASGM issues in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. It outlines the Blacksmith Institute’s background and focus, and describes work since 2008 across Mt. Muro, Gunung Mas District, and Palangka Raya. The project estimates mercury use of 50–100 tonnes per year at Mt. Muro and a population at risk of 20,000. Activities include technical assistance refining retorts and introducing a water box condenser and simple electrolysis, health education on mercury hazards, and a participatory approach linking government, NGOs, private sectors, mining groups, and the public. Reported results include an estimated 7 tonnes per year reduction in mercury emissions and benefits of collaboration for resources, knowledge, and replication.
