Abstract
The 2020 Global Status Report for Buildings and Construction finds that the sector remains a major contributor to climate change, accounting for 38% of global energy-related carbon emissions despite stable energy consumption. Progress toward decarbonization has slowed, with emissions reaching record levels and investment in energy efficiency lagging behind conventional construction. The report highlights the need for stronger policies, expanded building energy codes, increased financing for green buildings, and accelerated adoption of net-zero strategies. Although COVID-19 disrupted construction activities worldwide, it also created opportunities for green recovery through building renovations, sustainable investment, and resilient, low-carbon development pathways.
