Abstract
This document outlines the behavior of mercury across environmental media, identifies major anthropogenic sources, and frames implications for waste management. It explains mercury’s persistence, mobility, and bioaccumulation; its retention in organs; gaseous and particulate forms in air; and conversion to methylmercury in water. It catalogs source categories: fossil-fuel extraction and combustion; primary metal production; cement, pulp and paper, and lime manufacturing; mercury-based industrial catalysts; and consumer and professional products, including lamps, switches, thermometers, batteries, biocides, paints, pharmaceuticals, dental amalgams, gauges, laboratory uses, and ritual applications. It situates these issues within Pakistan’s context and foreshadows practical management approaches and recommendations.
