Abstract
This report presents outcomes from a regional consultation that examined how trade can support sustainable agriculture supply chains in Asia, focusing on biodiversity, economic development and inclusive participation. It outlines the current agricultural and ecological context, noting the sector’s economic importance, extensive smallholder involvement and significant biodiversity alongside rising pressures from deforestation, emissions and unsustainable practices. The document identifies challenges such as traceability, regulatory complexity, data gaps, and inequitable incentives, while highlighting priorities including certification uptake, value chain approaches and capacity support. It also documents existing initiatives and concludes with conditions and coordinated actions required to enable sustainable, equitable and transparent agricultural trade systems.
