Abstract
This document compiles proceedings from a 1978 UNEP workshop on environmental aspects of the iron and steel industry, presenting reports on developed nations, developing nations, Eastern Europe, and new production methods. It maps pollution across sintering, coking, ironmaking, steelmaking, and finishing, distinguishing point-source and fugitive emissions to air and water, and noting solid wastes. It reviews control technologies, including electrostatic precipitators, wet scrubbers, and fabric filters, while highlighting gaps in fugitive control and coke-oven exposures. It assesses costs, energy and resources, siting, and standards, and forecasts gradual gains, with direct reduction and form coke as promising but limited options.
