Abstract

This document captures remarks by Theodor Swedjemark, ABB’s Chief Sustainability Officer, delivered to co-hosts, policymakers and stakeholders ahead of Stockholm+50. The speaker emphasizes that many technologies needed to halve global emissions by 2030 are already available but require stronger collaboration between industry and governments to deploy and innovate. He underscores that two-thirds of global primary energy is wasted, calling for energy efficiency as the best energy resource; notes that efficiency improvements could drive more than 40% of the reduction in energy-related greenhouse gases; and illustrates how fitting drives to electric motors can cut consumption by 25%. The speech urges changes in consumer behaviour, creation of robust multilateral trading and carbon markets, and harmonized digitalization regulations. It highlights attention to Africa’s development needs and positions Stockholm+50 as preparation for the UN General Assembly and upcoming COP meetings.
