The Nature and Extent of Environmental Crimes in Seychelles - Situation Report

This report serves as a situation analysis examining the nature and extent of environmental crime within the Seychelles. Undertaken by the Institute for Security Studies, the document contributes to a regional study aimed at enhancing law enforcement against such offences. The research methodology involved comprehensive literature reviews of national legislation and policy documents, alongside the analysis of case reports and interviews with various government, parastatal, and non-governmental stakeholders. Key findings indicate that while an extensive legislative framework exists, it is largely outdated and lacks sufficiently deterrent penalties. Recorded crimes in 2008 primarily included pollution, illegal fishing, poaching, and development violations. Ultimately, the report identifies significant challenges in data management, institutional capacity, and enforcement, necessitating improved regional coordination and legislative reform.
