International Environmental Law-making and Diplomacy Review 2004

This review provides practical guidance, professional perspectives and historical context on international environmental law-making and diplomacy, drawing on lectures from the first University of Joensuu and United Nations Environment Programme Course on International Environmental Law-making and Diplomacy. It examines major themes including sustainable development, governance, treaty development, compliance, enforcement, environmental rights and water governance, while presenting legal principles, institutional approaches and practical experiences from diplomats, government officials and academics. The review discusses the evolution, implementation and effectiveness of international environmental agreements, explores challenges affecting compliance and institutional co-ordination, and considers mechanisms for strengthening international environmental governance through improved legal frameworks, capacity development, international co-operation and integrated management of shared natural resources and environmental issues.
