Abstract

This report, prepared by the Monitoring and Assessment Research Centre with support from the United Nations Environment Programme and Rockefeller Foundation, provides an in-depth analysis of the atmospheric pathways and impacts of sulphur compounds. Focusing on regional-to-continental scales, it examines the transport, transformation, and deposition of sulphur dioxide (SO₂) and sulphates, highlighting their significant role in environmental issues such as acid precipitation, ecosystem damage, and potential climate effects. The document reviews global and regional sulphur budgets, emphasizing the dominance of man-made emissions in industrialized areas and their far-reaching consequences. It also evaluates current monitoring programs and modeling techniques, identifying gaps in knowledge and proposing future research directions to better understand and mitigate sulphur pollution.
