Abstract

The Africa Regional Multi-stakeholder Consultation took place from 12-13 April 2022. During the consultation, participants underscored that the region must take charge of its destiny and map a path towards achieving the SDGs. Through online polls conducted during the meeting, participants identified the main actions to accelerate Africa’s progress towards a healthy planet and prosperity for all, including environmental and sustainability education, progressing sustainable agrifood, and adopting a circular economy approach. Many participants reiterated the need for local solutions that include integration of indigenous and traditional knowledge, consumption of local produce, and encouraging trade among African countries. Panelists highlighted the need to: • Address the challenges facing small scale farmers, who are mainly women and provide the most food; • Increase the role and participation of women in environmental policy and decision making; • Promote climate justice, especially for LDCs, by, inter alia, increasing climate adaptation finance; • Provide enabling conditions to enhance implementation of climate change protection measures in LDCs; • Adopt a multi-sectoral integration approach to implementing environmental policies; and • Work collectively “with one single voice” to achieve solutions for the many challenges of the region, as well as to hold governments accountable.
