Analysis of International Funding for the Sustainable Management of Coral Reefs and Associated Coastal Ecosystems

This analytical report examines international funding trends for the sustainable management of coral reefs and associated ecosystems such as mangroves and seagrasses between 2010 and 2016. Drawing on a dataset of 314 projects valued at over USD 1.9 billion, it provides insights into funding objectives, sources, and geographic distribution. Conducted by UN Environment in collaboration with ICRI and UNEP-WCMC, the analysis responds to key global policy mandates and emphasizes the alignment of financial commitments with conservation goals. The report identifies eight thematic funding areas, with conservation and marine protected area management receiving the largest share. It also highlights significant disparities in funding across regions and reef-rich nations. While funding has increased following global commitments like Rio+20 and Aichi Biodiversity Targets, the analysis underscores ongoing gaps relative to the economic value of reef ecosystems and the scale of global biodiversity ambitions. The findings aim to guide future investments, promote international collaboration, and encourage innovative financing for long-term reef resilience.
