Deep artificial drainage is a common prerequisite for using peatlands for intensive agriculture, forestry, peat extraction, or infrastructure. This practice reduces landscape-level water availability, disturbs the ecological functions of peatlands, and transforms them from CO2 sinks to CO2 sources.
