The World Environment Situation Room (WESR): A Federated Data System to support the SDGs and post- UNEP@50 Agenda

This strategy document outlines a conceptual approach for enhancing the World Environment Situation Room, a federated data system designed to support global environmental monitoring and sustainable development targets. Headquartered in Nairobi, the platform aims to facilitate free, open access to real-time environmental data, geospatial information, and analytics for the United Nations, member states, and diverse stakeholders. By leveraging an agile, user-centric approach and establishing multi-stakeholder partnerships across global and regional networks, the initiative intends to bridge data fragmentation and strengthen the science-policy interface. The implementation spans a three-phase roadmap from 2022 to 2030, transitioning from foundational infrastructure development to enhanced capacity building, and ultimately achieving a decentralised, bidirectional data ecosystem.
