Abstract

This document offers a detailed and accessible overview of the state of the world’s oceans, presented in a question-and-answer format. Drawing on the findings of the Joint Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspects of Marine Pollution (GESAMP), it outlines the critical role oceans play in sustaining life, regulating climate, and supporting biodiversity. The document highlights the alarming impact of pollution from industrial waste, agriculture, oil spills, radioactive discharge, and persistent organic pollutants like PCBs and DDT. It emphasizes the vulnerability of coastal zones, where human activity is most concentrated, and underscores the importance of improved waste management, pollution control, and international cooperation. While noting that the open ocean is not yet irreversibly damaged, the report delivers a strong warning: without decisive and sustained action, the cumulative effects of localized pollution could escalate into a global crisis.
