Inventory of Mercury Releases in Tanzania

This report has been developed by the Vice President’s Office – Division of Environment through a multi-stakeholder task force. The inventory was made with the use of the "Toolkit for identification and quantification of mercury releases" from UNEP Chemicals and represents a crucial first step towards establishing sound mercury management practices within the country. It systematically identifies and quantifies mercury inputs into society and releases into the environment, covering major sources such as primary metal production, particularly gold extraction, energy consumption from fossil fuels and biomass, and waste management practices including wastewater treatment and informal dumping. The findings highlight that the largest contributions to mercury releases stem from gold extraction activities, both with and without the use of retorts, as well as from charcoal combustion and cement production.
