The United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration - Strategy

This strategy report provides a professional summary of the global initiative to prevent, halt, and reverse worldwide ecosystem degradation between 2021 and 2030. Co-led by the United Nations Environment Programme and the Food and Agriculture Organisation, the document establishes a strategic framework to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by scaling up restoration efforts across hundreds of millions of hectares. Developed through extensive global consultations, the strategy addresses critical barriers—such as limited public awareness, political will, technical knowledge, and finance—by operating through three distinct pathways. These pathways focus on building a decentralised global movement, generating political support for policy and subsidy reforms, and enhancing technical capacity through natural and social science research. The implementation model utilizes a two-layered structure that leverages a core coordinating team alongside self-orchestrated stakeholder activities, ultimately aiming to foster a sustainable, values-based trajectory for human-nature relationships.
