Environmental Assessment of Ogoniland - Executive Summary

This document presents UNEP’s independent, two-year assessment of oil contamination in Ogoniland, commissioned by Nigeria’s Federal Government, covering land, water, air, ecosystems, public health, industry practices, and institutions. It reports extensive pollution from decades of spills, with hydrocarbons detected in soils to depths >5 m and in groundwater at many sites, including benzene in Ogale wells at more than 900 times the WHO guideline. Methods included over 4,000 samples, 142 monitoring wells, 780 soil boreholes, review of 5,000 medical records, and 264 community meetings. Findings note mangrove loss, impacts from artisanal refining, and regulatory inconsistencies under EGASPIN. The report recommends eight emergency actions, a sequenced clean-up prioritizing community risk, long-term ecosystem restoration, creation of an Environmental Restoration Authority, and a dedicated USD 1 billion fund, alongside comprehensive monitoring and industry reforms.
