Terminal Evaluation of the GEF-UNEP Project: Demonstration of Sustainable Alternatives to DDT and Strengthening of National Vector Control Capabilities In Middle East and North Africa

This evaluation report assesses a regional project implemented by the United Nations Environment Programme and executed by the World Health Organization to demonstrate sustainable alternatives to dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and strengthen national vector control capacities in eight Middle East and North Africa countries. It reviews the project’s relevance, design, effectiveness, efficiency, sustainability and management performance using desk review, interviews and survey data. The project aimed to reduce reliance on persistent organic pollutant pesticides through integrated vector management, capacity building, policy reform and disposal of obsolete stocks. While disposal of pesticide stocks was achieved satisfactorily, progress on policy development, institutional strengthening and demonstration activities was uneven, and overall impact and sustainability were assessed as moderately satisfactory.
