Driving Conservation through Sustainable Tourism Enterprises - Brief

This brief examines how sustainable tourism enterprises can support biodiversity conservation while creating alternative economic opportunities for people who depend on some of the world’s most biodiverse ecosystems. It explains that biodiversity underpins human well-being and prosperity but is increasingly threatened by human activities, including unsustainable tourism development and livelihood pressures in biodiversity hotspots such as savannahs, forests, and coral reefs. The document highlights how the exclusion of local communities from conservation areas and related economic opportunities has contributed to poverty and environmentally harmful practices. Drawing on examples from Namibia, Madagascar, and Kenya, it presents partnership models that link conservation, tourism, and community participation, and outlines policy measures to strengthen sustainable tourism, conservation financing, and multi-stakeholder collaboration.
