African Ecological Futures - Scenario Development Workshop

This white paper outlines a collaborative initiative between the African Development Bank and the World Wide Fund for Nature to examine how Africa’s development pathways may affect its ecological resource base. It presents the project’s context, noting rapid economic growth alongside increasing ecological pressure, and summarises a two-phase process combining sectoral scenario analyses and spatial research. The document identifies common growth drivers, key uncertainties, and governance features shaping possible futures. It describes a two-day, professionally facilitated workshop in Cairo designed to develop multiple plausible scenarios, assess ecological implications, and identify leverage points for influencing development trajectories.
