Abstract
This document summarises the key messages for scaling up ecosystem restoration for climate, biodiversity and human well-being. It urges the fulfilment of existing commitments to restore 1 billion hectares of degraded land and to set comparable targets for marine and coastal areas. Restoration is seen as essential to limiting warming to below 2°C, securing food systems and slowing extinctions. It highlights the increasing degradation, the disproportionate impact on marginalised groups and the inadequacy of conservation alone given the current use of 1.6 Earths. It reports that every dollar invested returns up to $30, that 1.3 billion people benefit from agroforestry, that fisheries increase by 16.5 million tonnes worth $32 billion, that one-third of the emissions reductions needed for 2030 are achieved, that the benefits of resilience are about four times the costs, and that 60% of expected extinctions are avoided by restoring 15% of converted land. The call to action includes financing green recovery, natural capital accounting, subsidy reform, waste reduction and participation by all.
