Mozambique NAP- Project Proposal

This document outlines Mozambique’s proposal to prepare a National Action Plan (NAP) for managing mercury in artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) under the Minamata Convention, describing a sector that accounts for over 90% of national gold output and involves at least 60,000 miners. It summarizes prior assessments and pilots (2003–2006) with UNIDO and partners, ongoing initiatives such as DANIDA-supported PASA and a World Bank SESA, and the creation of the Geological and Mining Institute. It defines objectives to build national capacity, establish coordination, complete a comprehensive sector analysis, assess institutional and public health needs with attention to women and children, conduct awareness activities, and finalize a gender-responsive NAP for governmental endorsement.
