Heritage Colombia (HECO): Resilient Landscapes that Maximizes Contribution to Colombia´s Mitigation and Adaptation Goals

This document outlines a strategic initiative designed to enhance climate change mitigation and adaptation across Colombia through the conservation of resilient landscapes. By addressing significant risks like deforestation and extreme weather, the programme aims to ensure the long-term financial and operational sustainability of the national system of protected areas. The scope includes nine critical landscapes covering over thirty per cent of the country, utilising a financial model that combines international cooperation, private sector resources, and increased government commitments to close funding gaps. Key objectives involve expanding protected areas, improving management effectiveness, and implementing sustainable land-use planning. Ultimately, this approach seeks to secure vital ecosystem services, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and strengthen the resilience of vulnerable populations against climate threats.
