Global Trends in Renewable Energy Investment 2014

Abstract

This document presents an analysis of renewable energy investment in 2013, excluding large hydro, using Bloomberg New Energy Finance’s database and defined coverage of sectors, asset classes, and deal types. It reviews global and regional flows and financing channels, including asset finance, small-scale deployment, public markets, venture capital/private equity, and acquisitions. Key findings include total investment of about $214 billion; renewables supplied 41.3% of new power capacity and 8.5% of generation; and wind proved relatively resilient while solar declined with falling system costs. China surpassed Europe as a center of investment. Public equity issuance recovered while asset finance and VC/PE fell.
