Africa Review Report on Sustainable Consumption and Production

This document presents a regional review of sustainable consumption and production (SCP) in Africa, offering a detailed assessment of trends, achievements, and challenges. It begins by outlining Africa’s socio-economic, demographic, and trade landscape, highlighting structural inequalities, urbanization, and resource dependency. It then evaluates sectoral trends in energy, food, water, industry, waste, and transport, linking them to SCP relevance, environmental pressures, and socio-economic impacts. Chapter 2 sets the analytical foundation by exploring production and consumption patterns and their implications for SCP. Chapter 3 reviews the implementation of the African 10-Year Framework Programme (10-YFP) and progress in priority SCP sectors, integrating thematic policy assessments and city-level initiatives. Chapter 4 identifies persistent barriers such as institutional weaknesses and financial constraints. Chapter 5 synthesizes lessons learned, emphasizing the need for enabling policy frameworks, effective tools, capacity building, and education. The final chapter presents conclusions that inform strategic directions for advancing SCP in Africa and supporting broader sustainable development goals.
