Abstract

This policy brief highlights the essential role of biodiversity in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It explains how biodiversity and ecosystem services support most Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to poverty, food security, health, gender equality, water, climate, sustainable cities, economic growth, and peace. Drawing on the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011–2020 and the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, it demonstrates how biodiversity conservation aligns with sustainable development. Case studies from several countries illustrate practical approaches for integrating biodiversity into national policies, planning, and development strategies.
