Abstract
This document presents a Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) programme tailored for the city of Cairo, developed under the African 10-Year Framework Programme with support from UNEP and Egypt’s environmental authorities. It identifies four high-priority sectors—solid waste management, industrial development, urban development (with focus on slums), and transportation and emissions—and assesses national, sectoral, and local contexts to formulate strategic actions. The programme integrates reviews of existing laws, strategies, and projects; identifies challenges such as inefficiencies, pollution, inadequate infrastructure, and weak enforcement; and proposes targeted actions including cleaner production initiatives, infrastructure upgrades, better planning, and public awareness campaigns. It includes detailed thematic analyses and suggests pilot projects like source separation of waste, industrial hazardous waste management, and prioritized bus corridors. The document concludes with policy and institutional recommendations, emphasizing the need for sustained commitment.
