Abstract

This document presents a preliminary analysis of area-based management tools to support implementation of ocean-related Sustainable Development Goals. It defines and compares marine spatial planning, integrated coastal management, marine protected areas, Particularly Sensitive Sea Areas, and fisheries closures, outlining core elements, commonalities, and differences. It characterizes each tool’s goals, processes, outcomes, spatial focus, engagement approach, and enforcement needs, and summarizes how these tools can directly contribute to selected SDG targets. It also describes methods and progress for compiling 20–25 practice examples and highlights influences, enabling conditions, and barriers relevant to effective SDG delivery within regional cooperation and governance contexts.
