The Reasons Behind the Differences in Projected Emissions Totals for 2030 Between the UNFCCC NDC Synthesis Report and the UNEP Emissions Gap Report 2021 - Technical Note

This technical note explains the differences between the 2030 global greenhouse gas emissions projections presented in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Nationally Determined Contributions Synthesis Report and the United Nations Environment Programme Emissions Gap Report 2021. It examines differences in methodologies, emissions accounting, land use treatment, harmonisation, and policy assumptions that result in emission estimates differing by approximately 6–7 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. It concludes that both reports consistently show current national commitments are insufficient to limit global warming to 1.5°C or well below 2°C.
